Despite many in the fantasy community eye-rolling at the Pittsburgh Steelers hiring of Arthur Smith as their new OC, Matt Harmon believes Smith’s track record suggests he could get the most out of the Steelers playmakers in 2024.

MATT HARMON: Arthur Smith was a great offensive coordinator hire by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and let me give you three reasons why. Number one, look, I fully admit he absolutely lost the plot as the playcaller late in his tenure with the Atlanta Falcons. But at times during his tenure there, he had some really good ideas and some ideas that are right in line with where the league is trending.
He was a verifiably great playcaller with the Tennessee Titans. And that brings me to my second point. I know the biggest complaint by every single person, and, frankly, a lot of you selfish fantasy football folks out there, is that Arthur Smith didn’t get the ball to his best players in Atlanta. Well, in Tennessee, that’s all he did was get the ball to his best players.
In 2020, AJ Brown and Corey Davis, clearly the two best pass-catchers on that roster, combined for almost 200 targets. Nobody else cleared more than 60. So don’t tell me that Arthur Smith can’t identify who are the best players on a roster when he’s the offensive coordinator and get those guys the football. We seen it.
And that brings me to my third and final point. The clear thing here, the most critical point of all this is Arthur Smith is the offensive coordinator and playcaller, not the head coach. Some guys just aren’t made for the big chair. That’s the reality of this job.
I think Tennessee was a great spot for Arthur Smith because he had a strong head coach who could set the tone, set the culture, and say to Arthur, hey, look at me, buddy– these are our guys. Let’s get the football to our guys. And I think Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh knows that his guys are Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Diontae Johnson, George Pickens– those guys are going to be getting the…
