Matthew Hawn impressed by Pat Flaherty after his Rutgers football offer

Matthew Hawn was offered by Rutgers football last week, with the New York offensive linemen registering his fifth Power Five offer.

From Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse, New York), Hawn is a 6-foot-6, 270-pound interior offensive lineman. Rutgers entered his recruitment last week alongside offers from Boston College, Duke, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

Physically well-built, Hawn moves well for his size and has good strength. Laterally, he moves well and he finishes off his blocks effectively. He has the ability to pull and get downfield as a blocker.

He spoke with Rutgers Wire last week about the offer from the Big Ten program and the relationship he is forming with head coach Greg Schiano and offensive line coach Pat Flaherty.

“So I was in contact with coach Vallone (Scott Vallone), he was the assistant offensive line coach and is now their tight ends coach – I was in contact with him for a while,” Hawn told Rutgers Wire.

“And a month ago, he came down to one of our lifts, to watch our workouts, different o-line drills. He really liked it. Then coach Pat Flaherty watched my film and head coach Greg Schiano called with an offer.”

The relationship with Flaherty is an emerging one for Hawn.

A veteran NFL coach, Flaherty spent over two decades in the NFL as an offensive line coach. He is best known for having won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants.

Former Rutgers offensive lineman Shaun O’Hara became an All-Pro under Flaherty.

“I talked to him about 30 minutes the other day (last week). Just for him to talk about his career, coaching at Rutgers, coaching other places, coming back to Rutgers. Talked about himself, his family, how he teaches,” Hawn said.
