Cleveland Browns add UConn offensive coordinator Nick Charlton as run game specialist

The Browns haven’t just added to their roster over the last few days. They’ve also added to the coaching staff.

University of Connecticut offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Nick Charlton has been hired as an offensive assistant/run game specialist, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report.

Charlton becomes the latest addition to the offensive staff, and the second major one the Browns have plucked from the college ranks. They also hired former University of Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to be their tight ends coach and pass game specialist.

The 35-year-old Charlton had been at UConn the past two season. Prior to that, he had spent three season as the head coach at FCS Division I Maine, where he went 14-13.

Prior to being Maine’s head coach, he was an assistant coach there from 2015-18. He started as the wide receivers coach, then added special teams coordinator before spending the final season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Charlton’s coaching career started in 2012 as a recruiting graduate assistant at Boston College, his college alma mater. He spent 2013-14 as an offensive graduate assistant for Boston College.
