Troy football wide receiver Chris Lewis was diagnosed with cancer during the 2023 season, he told ESPN.
Lewis told ESPN that it started with tightness behind his left knee and delayed an MRI to after the Sun Belt title game win over Appalachian State. The MRI discovered Lewis had a mass behind the knee. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive malignant bone tumor in his femur according to ESPN.
It all happened as Lewis was the team’s second-leading receiver with 32 catches for 735 yards, averaging less than 23 yards a catch. He had a team-high 10 receiving touchdowns, over a third of the teams total receiving touchdowns. He played in the Birmingham Bowl, following his diagnosis, but his only stat recorded was an 11-yard pass.
