Matt Walsh hired as Matawan Regional’s head football coach

Matt Walsh was approved as Matawan Regional High School’s head football coach Thursday night by the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education, Matawan principal Michael Wells said Friday morning.

Matawan Regional High School’s head football coach this season will be Matt Walsh, who was approved as the Huskies’ head coach by the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education Thursday night.

Walsh, who was a quarterback at Middletown High School South from 2003-2005, where he was a teammate of running back Knowshon Moreno and linebacker Nick Macaluso, succeeds Jay Graber.

Graber, Matawan’s head coach the last five seasons, resigned to accept the position as head football coach at Brick Township High School in February.

The Huskies went 21-23 with playoff appearances the last two seasons under Graber. Walsh was Matawan’s defensive coordinator-defensive line coach. Matawan went 4-6 last season, but has most of its team returning, including Rutgers University offensive line recruit Jayden Elijah.

Middletown South went 36-0 with three consecutive NJSIAA championships during Walsh’s scholastic career. He then went on to play collegiate football at Monmouth University.

Matawan has one of the richest football traditions in the Shore, dating back to when Barry Rizzo was its head coach and then Joe Martucci. The Huskies have won seven NJSIAA sectional championships, with the last one coming in 2014. Five of those sectional titles came under Martucci, who was Matawan’s head coach from 1984-2011.

The Huskies will compete in Shore Conference Class B North this season with Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Middletown…
