SOUTHFIELD — Things have changed with the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association All-Star game since Tecumseh’s Tim Bryan suited up in 1988.
For one, Bryan played for the West. For another, the game was played at Michigan State University.
On Saturday, Bryan got to experience watching his son, A.J., suit up and play for the East in the East-West Classic at Lawrence Tech University.

“It was pretty fantastic,” Bryan said. “It was an awesome game; it was a close game, and no one got hurt. I’m super proud of him. He’s a great kid.”
A.J. was a touchdown machine at Tecumseh from his running back spot the last couple of seasons, piling up big numbers both running the ball and catching passes out of the backfield. On Saturday, though, he was used on defense and special teams. He was a starting outside linebacker.
“It was weird not seeing him playing running back,” Bryan said. “But I think he had of fun.”
A.J. agreed.
“It was an amazing experience,” he said. “I just enjoyed playing football. It is a God-given thing – he blesses this for us.”
The players came to Southfield on Thursday to check in and start practice. They had two days of three practices each day, including a late Friday walk-through, to get ready for the game. A.J. said it wasn’t difficult to shake the rust off the pads even though most players haven’t touched a helmet since November.
“When you love the sport and you’ve played it most of your life, you are kind of used to it,” A.J. said. “It was a little hard coming off a hot summer.”
Clinton graduate Wyatt Hicks also played for the East.
