Why Jerry Kill can coach Vanderbilt football on sidelines due to NCAA rule change

With a new NCAA rule change, Jerry Kill will be able to provide on-field instruction to Vanderbilt football players in the fall.

Kill, who resigned from his post as New Mexico State head coach in December 2023 and then joined the Commodores’ staff as the chief consultant to the head coach a month later, was not among the program’s 11 countable coaches. The restrictions on off-campus recruiting will still apply to anyone outside the 11 countable coaches, including Kill.

Beyond Kill, the Commodores have 10 staffers with titles of analyst, quality control, consultant or graduate assistant. All of these coaches also will be able to take part in on-field coaching.

In addition to the removed restrictions on on-field coaching, the NCAA also removed cannabis as a banned drug for football, meaning that the NCAA will no longer suspend players who test positive for cannabis.
