The Washington Capitals acquired forward Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames on Thursday night, adding more veteran scoring around star Alex Ovechkin.

The Flames received a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft. It was originally owned by the Colorado Avalanche and traded to Washington for center Lars Eller.

The 28-year-old Mangiapane, entering his eighth NHL season, will be in the last year of his contract, with a $5.8 million cap hit. He had 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points in 75 games last season for Calgary.

Mangiapane has been unable to recapture the magic of his 2021-22 season, when he set career bests for goals (35) and points (55) for the Flames. In 417 career NHL games with Calgary, Mangiapane recorded 215 points (109 goals, 106 assists).

The Capitals made the playoffs last season but had the 28th best goals-per-game average in the regular season (2.63). General manager Brian MacLellan has sought to bolster that offense this offseason, acquiring center Pierre Luc-Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings for goalie Darcy Kuemper last week.

These acquisitions were even more essential due to injuries to Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom and winger T.J. Oshie, clouding their futures. Increased offense also will be a boost to Ovechkin, who sits 42 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record.
