UNC football lands commitment from three-star offensive lineman

For the second-straight day, the North Carolina Tar Heels’ football program has landed a commitment from a prospect in the 2025 recruiting class.

After three-star athlete Julien Horton flipped from Maryland to North Carolina, a big Texas offensive lineman has joined UNC’s class. Three-star offensive lineman Byron Nelson pledged his verbal commitment to the program on Friday, ending his recruitment and becoming a Tar Heel.

The 6-foot-2, 295-pound Nelson picked North Carolina over finalists Vanderbilt and Pittsburgh. He did have 16 offers in his recruitment overall, but those were the three programs he took visits to in the month of June and became his focus.

After Nelson visited UNC last weekend, it was enough for the Tar Heels to secure a commitment from the offensive lineman.

The Katy, Texas native is ranked No. 1,073 overall, No. 74 offensive lineman and the No. 174 player in the state of Texas per the 247Sports recruiting rankings for the 2025 class.

His commitment now gives the Tar Heels 12 players for the 2025 class which is ranked No. 37 overall. It’s still very early in the recruiting cycle and the Tar Heels have some big targets they are pursuing, so that ranking should climb even higher.
