Jul. 3—WINNER, S.D. — Multi-sport standout Shawn Hammerbeck, of Winner High School, has announced his verbal commitment to play college football at the University of Nebraska.
Hammberbeck, a rising senior, made his decision public at noon Wednesday with a post on X (formerly Twitter), choosing the Cornhuskers over several other Division I scholarship offers.
According to the recruiting site On3, Hammerbeck went on official visits to Nebraska, Texas Tech, Minnesota and Kansas State. He also held offers from Michigan State, Kansas and Oregon State, as well as North Dakota State and South Dakota.
Though he has played tight end and defensive end in high school, the 6-foot-7, 260-pounder is projected as an offensive lineman at the collegiate level. Hammerbeck is rated a three-star (out of five) prospect by most major recruiting sites, with On3 ranking him as the No. 43 offensive line prospect nationally.
As a junior, Hammerbeck put together exceptional fall, winter and spring sports seasons. On the gridiron, Hammerbeck led the Warriors in tackles and sacks and was a Class 11B all-state selection. On the basketball court, he was a Class A all-state pick, averaging a double-double at 15.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per contest. This spring, Hammerbeck was crowned the Class A discus champion with a personal-record throw of 163 feet, 3 inches, and he also placed fifth in the javelin and ninth in the shot put.
