EA Sports is two weeks from releasing the first college football video game in a decade.
Much has changed in the last 10 years, with the biggest difference being the opportunity for players to get paid for their name, image and likeness. As a result, EA Sports solicited athletes from each school to opt into being included in the video game.
According to ESPN, more than 10,000 players opted in. But only 85 from each school can be included. That selection process is mostly based on depth charts but also takes athletes’ social media popularity into account. A day after the pack was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, EA Sports finalized the rosters and notified players of their inclusion, according to The Athletic. The company made concessions for transfer portal players, so even if an athlete switched schools in the last five months, he would already be in the system, allowing for team modifications.
