CBS Sports evaluates the job security of all 134 FBS head coaches

In college football, the reality of the matter is coaches don’t last long, especially in the Southeastern Conference. Only Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoop and Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart have been at their current school for more than five years with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Texas A&M Aggies all having new coaches in 2024.

After a 5-7 record in his first year with the Texas Longhorns, including a 3-6 record in the Big 12, people weren’t sure if Steve Sarkisian was the man for the job. However, Sarkisian was able to right the ship in 2022 with an 8-5 record and an Alamo Bowl appearance. But, it was 2023 that instilled the belief in Sarkisian as he guided Texas to a 12-2 record with a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff berth.

Going into the upcoming season, CBS Sports evaluated the job security of all 134 FBS coaches in tiers from “win or be fired” to “untouchable.” CBS Sports places Sarkisian as one of just 13 coaches in the untouchable tier. With a conference title, Playoff berth, and contract extension all coming within the past year, Sarkisian’s job won’t truly be in jeopardy if they struggle in their first year in the SEC.
