How 4-star DL Maxwell Roy joined Ohio State football 2025 recruiting class

Maxwell Roy had an idea of what he wanted his football career to look like.

Roy entered St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia aspiring to be the team’s starting right tackle. It’s the position he’d been practicing and training for. It’s the position he played through his freshman season. It’s where he felt his future was.

But Gabe Infante saw something different.

Infante was a defensive analyst for Penn State when Roy attended a summer recruiting camp. But Infante also had spent 10 seasons as the head coach at St. Joseph’s and hired the majority of the staff that coached Roy. So when Infante, now a coach at Duke, pegged Roy as a defensive tackle instead of a right tackle, Roy’s path changed.

“Since that day,” Roy said, “I never went back.”

Defensive tackle is the position that allowed Roy to join Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class. He committed to the Buckeyes as their fifth defensive lineman along with Zahir Mathis, London Merritt, Zion Grady and Trajen Odom.

Why 2025 DT Maxwell Roy loves defensive line

Defensive line is a position Roy said he’s come to love.

He calls it the “hardest-working position on the football field,” one that reminds him of his past in wrestling − fighting for hand positioning and leverage, trying for a takedown wherever he was on the mat.

“I think that’s what helped me coming in, playing D-line and being an automatic fit for it,” Roy said. “It’s just everything I’ve been doing for my entire life…
