According to Colorado football quarterback Shedeur Sanders, every opponent the Buffs face this year will treat the matchup like their “Super Bowl.”
Sanders made the confident comment during the Big 12 football media days earlier this week after being asked if being CU head coach Deion Sanders’ son fuels an obligation to perform. The senior QB replied calmly, saying:
“It’s been that since day one,” Sanders said. “I remember the first media day when I was at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). I said, ‘We won’t lose a game.’ I’m undefeated in the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference). So, I already know what the expectation comes with. I know we’re everybody’s Super Bowl so I always just stay level headed and stay grounded because I would never want to be that guy that looks back and not be able to take advantage of the moment we have right now.”
Per usual, the quote ruffled some feathers. Many again pointed to Colorado’s 4-8 record from last season, joking that all of the Buffs’ losses resulted in “Super Bowl” wins for the eight victorious opponents.
However, the backlash Sanders has received for the remark has ironically proved why the expectations his opponents hold when playing him make sense. To further prove Sanders’ point, just two weeks ago, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule explained how the Cornhuskers’ Week 2 matchup against the Buffs should bring more eyes to his program.
