College football tributes to Bucs coaching legend Monte Kiffin

The death of longtime Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has sparked an outpouring of comments from those around the game. Not just in the NFL, where he made an enormous impact on the game, but in college football, too.

From SEC commissioner Greg Sankey: “Sharing our condolences and sympathies with the Kiffin Family following the passing of Monte. He made a remarkable contribution to the game of football. Thank you for sharing him with us through the years.”

From Nebraska, where Kiffin played and where he began his coaching career as a grad assistant: “On behalf of Nebraska Football, our condolences go out to the family of former Husker player and coach Monte Kiffin and to those he impacted through his legendary career.”

From Florida Atlantic athletic director Brian White after Kiffin spent three years on the Owls’ staff: “Monte was a coaching legend and one of the most respected individuals in football. He was a beloved member of the FAU and Boca Raton communities, and we were all fortunate for our time with him. Not just a great football mind, Monte was a tremendous person who had a positive impact on so many. I extend my deepest sympathies to Lane and the Kiffin family in this difficult time.”

From Owls coach Tom Herman: “I extend my condolences to Lane and the rest of the Kiffin family. Monte’s impact on the game of football is profound. Everyone in our profession spoke so highly of him, not just for his football acumen but for his character, his passion, and his professionalism. Our game lost a great one.”

And from Tulane coach Jon Sumrall, who made his head coaching debut for Troy against Mississippi (where Kiffin was on staff): “After my first game as a head coach he came to our locker room and complimented the way our team played. His encouragement meant a great deal to me personally…
