The Jets have already brought in some big names this offseason, but could GM Joe Douglas have one more trick up his sleeve?
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade following stalled-out contract extension talks.
So, could the Jets come calling for the former first-round pick?
The Arizona State product would surely be a fit on any NFL team, as he’s gotten better in each of his four pro seasons, culminating with a 2023 campaign in which he caught 75 passes for 1,342 and seven touchdowns. Over the course of his career, Aiyuk has averaged 14.4 yards per touch, proving to be one of the more explosive players in the NFL with the ball in his hands.
The Jets already made a splashy move at receiver this offseason, inking former Los Angeles Chargers wideout Mike Williams to start opposite Garrett Wilson. But Williams has dealt with injury issues during his career, and even if he is healthy the Jets could certainly stand to give Aaron Rodgers another weapon. A trio of Wilson, Williams, and Aiyuk would give the Jets perhaps the best “big three” in the NFL.
The Jets have some intriguing names on the wide receiver depth chart, such as third-round pick Malachi Corley and the disappointing Allen Lazard, who has strong rapport with Rodgers. But no current Jet could replicate the star power that Aiyuk would bring to the field.
Aiyuk is currently set to play the 2024 season on his fifth-year option, which would pay him roughly $14 million, but any potential trade for the 26-year-old would almost certainly have to include a new contract as well.
