Paul Finebaum lists North Carolina as the primary target for SEC

It wouldn’t be Summer if there weren’t more rumblings of conference realignment in college athletics. And as we navigate through July, it’s Florida State and Clemson that are grabbing the headlines in that subject.

With the rumors swirling that the Big 12 would be interested in both the Seminoles and Tigers, the headlines have centered around the Big Ten and SEC’s non-interest. But on Monday, SEC analyst and respected media member Paul Finebaum had an interesting take.

He believes that if the SEC does eventually expand, the North Carolina Tar Heels would be the conference’s primary target for expansion. Here is what he said on ‘McElroy and Cubelic In The Morning’ on Monday:

“It’s North Carolina at the top. I think, after that, it’s a little bit unknown. There’s a million different theories. Would North Carolina take someone with them? Or would they just sit around?”

That is in line with previous reports of both the Big Ten and SEC having UNC near the top of their list.

The SEC currently sits at 16 teams after some additions to the conference and right now there is no indication that they would expand. But things can change in a hurry with these types of things.

If it happens, the ball could be in North Carolina’s court to make a decision.
