Nick Saban is now a commentator in his post-coaching existence. Saban attended SEC media days and had plenty to say about various SEC teams. When he was asked about the Oklahoma Sooners, Saban offered some interesting remarks which included a brief mention of Lincoln Riley.
When Saban says that the roster is better and that the defense appears to be improved, that could apply to USC just as much as Oklahoma. The equation might be a little more complicated in the sense that USC’s talent might not be massively better than last year. However, the quality of USC’s defensive coaching might be so much better that the talent on that side of the ball is much more likely to shine through than at any point over the past two seasons under Alex Grinch. USC, not just Oklahoma, is poised to make gains on defense and thereby arrive at the start of the 2024 college football season with an overall roster which is better than 2023.
“I think their roster is getting better, especially on the defensive side which was the issue.”
“They had good offenses when Lincoln Riley was there, but never had the defenses to get over the hump.”
