The debate is over.
The University of Tennessee is the official “UT” of the Southeastern Conference.
At least that is according to the press release put out by the SEC Friday morning when it announced who made the conference’s preseason teams as Tennessee was abbreviated and the University of Texas was listed as “TEX.”

Sure, this is not as big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but again “It Just Means More” in the SEC, especially among fan bases. Was the decision based on seniority, as Tennessee is one of the founding teams of the SEC? Possible. Or was it done blindly with no intention of ending or knowing of the debate? Also possible.
But what is known is that Friday’s development has most definitely added an extra layer to the chirping and banter between both fan bases to a rivalry and “debate” that picked up steam a few years back when it was announced Texas would be joining the SEC.
Tennessee and Texas are not scheduled to play each other this regular season during SEC play and won’t face each other until 2026 in the regular season. Texas officially left the Big 12 to join the SEC with Oklahoma on July 1, the first time the SEC has added teams to its membership since Texas A&M and Missouri joined the conference in 2014.
