Hillsboro football coaches receive suspensions for off-campus incident

Four Hillsboro football coaches were suspended following a special school board meeting on Thursday due to an “off-campus incident,” the Journal-News reported on Monday.

Head coach Joe Reed, who is entering his fourth season at the helm, is suspended for the first six games of the season — including pre-season training — while assistant coaches Zach Reed, Bill Reed and Ryan Lipe will serve four-game suspensions.

Hillsboro superintendent David Powell said in a phone interview with the State Journal-Register on Monday he doesn’t anticipate an interim head coach to be named during Joe Reed’s suspension and expects the assistants to rotate their suspensions so that coaching responsibilities may be fulfilled in that span.

Powell declined to further comment on the incident that led to the suspensions, but that it didn’t involve any current students.

Joe Reed led the Hiltoppers to the Class 3A playoffs in 2022.
