North Carolina Tar Heels’ running back Omarion Hampton is back for another season, fresh off a big 2023 campaign. And before 2024 gets going, Hampton is earning some preseason recognition.
On Monday before the Tar Heels open up training camp, Hampton was named to the 2024 Maxwell Award Watch List. Hampton is one of 80 players in college football to make the list including 20 from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Last season, UNC football quarterback Drake Maye made the list to represent the Tar Heels.
Hampton is coming off a career year in 2023, rushing for 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged 115.69 rushing yards per game for the Tar Heels.
Hampton’s 2023 season also helped him earn All-American honors a year ago as well as first-team All-ACC honors. He’s undoubtedly North Carolina’s best-returning player from last season.
The list of 80 players will be trimmed down to semifinalists on November 12, 2024 and then three finalists two weeks later on November 26th. The winner of the 88th Maxwell Award will be announced on December 12, 2024 as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
