Alabama football’s secondary was depleted following the 2023 season, there is no question about that.
In fact, entering this season, the Crimson Tide is tasked with replacing every starting defensive back from its 2023 roster aside from Malachi Moore. Despite not returning much, however, what Alabama does have is an arsenal of transfers and incoming freshmen to fill those holes on the depth chart.
In total, Alabama brought in five transfers for its secondary: cornerbacks Domani Jackson (USC) and DaShawn Jones (Wake Forest) and safeties Keon Sabb (Michigan), King Mack (Penn State) and Kameron Howard (Charlotte). Among those five, Howard, Mack and Jones, making their Alabama debut on Wednesday during the first practice of preseason camp.
“I love their energy,” DeBoer said Wednesday following practice. “I love their attitude, they give great effort. They have really meshed well with the team, I think there’s a ton of respect by their teammates. That’s what you want. A lot of that starts with just their character and the work ethic that follows along.”
Jackson comes to Tuscaloosa after two seasons at USC, seeing time in 11 games in 2023, totaling 33 total tackles and three pass breakups. Jones also comes with experience, starting in nine games for Wake Forest, totaling 37 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and three interceptions to go with two pass breakups.
Sabb was a part of Michigan’s national championship team in 2023, tallying 28 tackles, one for loss, along with four pass breakups and two interceptions. Mack appeared in 13 games at Penn State, totaling three tackles and a quarterback hurry. Howard saw time in 12 gameswith Charlotte, registering 38 tackles with 0.5 for loss to go with two interceptions and one pass breakup.
