Mountaineers begin fall practice today

Jul. 31—The 2024 college football season is just around the corner as the West Virginia Mountaineers will hold their first of 15 fall practices today.

The Mountaineers, who open the season at home against Penn State on Aug. 31, will also practice on Thursday and Friday this week before holding Fan Day at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday morning.

Fan Day will begin at 9:20 a.m. on the west concourse inside Milan Puskar Stadium. Head coach Neal Brown as well as assistant coaches and players will be present to sign autographs.

The autograph session will conclude at 11 a.m., at which point fans will be able to watch the team practice in the stadium until 1 p.m.

After Saturday, the team will practice almost daily until the first day of fall classes on Aug. 21. WVU will then begin regular game prep for the season opener on the following Saturday.

Greene on Maxwell watch list Earlier this week, senior quarterback Garrett Greene was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, presented to the outstanding player in college football. A total of 80 athletes were named to the preseason watch list, headlined by five semifinalists from last season—Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, Missouri receiver Luther Burden III, Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon III and Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter.

Former Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. won the 2023 Maxwell Award and was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the NFL Draft. Greene threw for 2, 406 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first season as WVU’s starter. He completed 53 % of his passes and was only intercepted four times. On the ground, Greene ran for 772 yards and 13 more scores.
