Return specialist Tarik Cohen, who signed with the Jets in May, has decided to call it a career.
According to multiple reports, Cohen informed the Jets on Thursday morning that he is retiring from the NFL, ending a comeback attempt for the 29-year-old.
Cohen had not played in the NFL since the 2020 season due to a handful of serious injuries. He played three games in 2020 before tearing his ACL and MCL. After missing the entire 2021 season, Cohen then tore his Achilles while working out in May 2022, once again delaying his return to the field.
After a hamstring injury kept him off the field last season, Cohen was signed by the Jets with the hopes that he could be a weapon under the new NFL kick return rules, which now greatly favor the return game.
At his peak, Cohen was an electrifying player, racking up 985 punt return yards and 628 kick return yards, earning All-Pro honors with the Chicago Bears in 2019.
With Cohen now off the roster, receiver Xavier Gipson may have a leg up to be the Jets’ No. 1 return option, though the team will likely continue to work in other players throughout camp.
