It’s been a long road back to the football field for Daniel Jones.
After grinding his way through the offseason in his recovery from a torn ACL, the Giants’ quarterback was limited in workouts, but he was finally cleared for a full return during training camp and he hasn’t missed a beat.
While the former first-round pick has struggled at times, Jones’ teammates and coaches have seen other things, and they are excited about the progress he’s made this quickly.
“He’s in the right mind space right now,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do and he looks normal out there. He’s been right on track, which is pretty impressive in terms of he had the injury and this is what he’s at already, so I’m proud of him.”
“He looks confident,” wide receiver Jalin Hyatt added. “Just to see him running around after seeing what he went through last year with all the injuries and what’s done this offseason, I’m just so proud of what he’s done so far and I can’t wait to watch him play.”
That certainly bodes well for Jones heading into a massive season after the Giants were enamored by some of the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class and potentially looked to move up to select his replacement.
Instead, they acquired him a top-tier target in the form of LSU’s star wide receiver Malik Nabers, who has already been impressing with his outstanding route running and playmaking abilities in camp.
Now that Nabers is in the mix to go along with the speedy group of Hyatt, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Darius Slayton among others, the Giants are hoping that Jones will be able to take more shots downfield this season.
“That’s something we’ve emphasized,” Hyatt said. “We didn’t really connect on a lot last year, so that’s been one of our biggest focuses that we need to work on. We’re still improving, we’re getting there, but we need every day to keep getting better.”
In an effort to keep building that…
