College football: Lobo and Aggie named to national preseason watch lists

Aug. 2—New Mexico punter Aaron Rodriguez was named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list on Friday.

Rodriguez, a sixth-year senior, is one of five punters from the Mountain West to make the list of 34. Named after former Southern Miss All-American and NFL All-Pro Ray Guy, the award is annually given to the best punter in college football.

Rodriguez averaged 42.4 yards per punt last season and was named second team All-Mountain West in 2022. He is set to complete his final year of eligibility while attending UNM College of Nursing this fall.

Also, New Mexico State offensive tackle Shiyazh Pete was named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list earlier this week.

Pete, a former first team All-Conference USA lineman, is one of 24 tackles named to the 75-player watch list, and is just one of four honorees from Conference USA. Last season, the redshirt junior helped anchor an offensive line that guided the Aggies (10-5) to a historic upset over Auburn and a CUSA Championship game appearance in their first season as league members.
