How will Wilmington moving down to Class 1A affect the District 10 football playoffs?

The Times-News is counting down to District 10 high school football kickoff with 25 topics, focusing on one question daily, leading up to the start of the northwestern Pennsylvania season on Aug. 23.

20. How will Wilmington moving down to Class 1A affect the District 10 playoffs?

Wilmington has one of the most successful football programs in District 10 under head coach Branndon Phillian, but the Greyhounds have struggled to win the district in Class 2A over the past few years. Farrell has been the team to beat and continues to hold that title this fall. Wilmington, however, moved down to Class 1A in the offseason because of a smaller enrollment.

Wilmington’s last D-10 title came in 2020, and the Greyhounds could be one of the teams to beat in Class 1A this cycle. The Greyhounds bring back a talented junior class, including Jacob Coulter, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound offensive and defensive tackle and Collin Rolli, a 6-3, 240-pound offensive and defensive tackle. The two are returning starters on both lines, while junior Freddie Zehetner is a returning starter at split end and cornerback. Other juniors to watch include Jamie Miller at running back and linebacker, Maverick Whiting at guard and defensive end and Danny Leonard at guard and linebacker.

Wilmington has a smaller senior class, but Aidan Gardner is a top returning player at fullback and linebacker and sophomore Chase Mitcheltree could be in for a big year at running back and safety. Mitcheltree is one of the Hounds’ top offensive players back from last year.
