Giants Training Camp Quick Hits: Brian Burns unstoppable off the edge, Malik Nabers’ explosiveness on display

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A few thoughts from the Giants’ ninth camp practice …

– It was a much lighter day for the Giants, as expected with the Lions en route for a pair of joint practices on Monday and Tuesday. Quarterback Daniel Jones finished 7-of-9 passing. He actually completed the first five passes of the day before throwing an interception to Jason Pinnock. That one wasn’t Jones’ fault, though. The ball went right through the hands of tight end Daniel Bellinger. Bellinger’s been very quiet this summer. It might not be long before you start seeing Theo Johnson and a healthy Lawrence Cager (hamstring) out-rep him.

– There was a long touchdown to Wan’Dale Robinson from Jones deep down the seam (busted coverage). It wouldn’t have counted, though. Edge Brian Burns had an obvious sack – one of three on the day. It’s notable when someone beats tackle Andrew Thomas once. But three times? Should be noted: No pads. That puts the defense at an advantage.

– The Giants continue to find ways to get Malik Nabers the ball. Two of the first three plays of team drills were plays designed to get the ball into Nabers’ hands. It makes sense. He’s far and away their most explosive player and capable of special things whenever he has the ball.

– It’s becoming very obvious that former first-round pick Evan Neal does not factor into the team’s Week 1 plans on the offensive line. Coach Brian Daboll said he’s progressing, but that’s what he says about every injured player. He ran at practice on Sunday, but he’s not doing anything that would indicate a return to team drills is imminent. The Giants looked settled on the following once John Michael Schmitz returns: Thomas, Jon Runyan, Schmitz, Greg Van Roten (filling in at center at the moment), Jermaine Eluemunor.

– Backup quarterback Drew Lock had a few impressive passes, including a touchdown to Isaiah McKenzie. Third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito had a long one over the middle to Dennis Houston.
