When The Athletic calls a college football player a “freak,” that’s to be considered a compliment. And the Gophers had two players named to the outlet’s Freaks List in 2024.
On the list of most eye-popping and jaw-dropping players in college football, left tackle Aireontae Ersery came in at No. 25 and linebacker Cody Lindenberg at No. 72.
Ersery is considered a potential first-round NFL draft pick in April and the distinction in being on reporter Bruce Feldman’s list helps burnish those credentials.
The Athletic said the 6-foot-6, 330-pound senior offensive lineman squatted 640 pounds and bench pressed 412, but it really is his 1.52-second 10-yard split time, which set a program record for offensive lineman, that put him so high. The Kansas City, Mo., native’s top speed was measured at 18.3 mph.
Lindenberg was all-Big Ten honorable mention in 2022, but played only four games due to injury last season. The Anoka native is healthy in preseason camp and previously showed that in offseason measurements.
The 6-foot-3 and 240-pounder had a pro shuttle time of 4.00, which The Athletic noted no linebacker has moved that quick since 2019. He also benched 350 pounds, with a broad jump of 10 feet and a vertical jump 36 inches.
Gophers receiver Le’Meke Brockington was an honorable mention on the Freaks List with a U skill-position squat record of 614 pounds to go along with a 42-inch vertical and 1.43-second 10-yard split.
