My preseason college football predictions

Aug. 6—The college football regular season is just a couple weeks away with Florida State taking on Georgia Tech in Dublin Aug. 24.

I thought I would give my preseason predictions for conference champions, that is if I can keep straight what schools are now in which conference.

Big Ten

The Big Ten now is comprised of 18 teams. If defending national champion Michigan can keep away from suspension (in trouble again), I am sure the Wolverines will be in contention. Michigan only leaves the Big House four times this season, but one of those at the Horseshoe in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio State is loaded again this season. The Buckeyes get the team from up North at home, but do have to make the long trek to Oregon. I think the trip to Duck country and the one to Happy Valley to face Penn State are the only roadblocks for the Buckeyes before the showdown with Michigan.

I like the Ducks young head coach Dan Lanning. After Oregon’s home battle with Ohio State, trips to Michigan and Wisconsin come in November. I still like the Ducks for the conference title, just barely over Ohio State.

ACC

I gave Miami a look, but a 12-13 mark over the past two years leaves me wondering if the Hurricanes have made the jump to contender.

With that, I have to pick Florida State to repeat as ACC champs (as difficult as that is to write as a Notre Dame fan, right John?).

SEC

The SEC has been a loaded football conference for several years and this year the conference adds Texas and Oklahoma to its ranks.

A sleeper in the conference might be Texas A&M. The Aggies do not play Alabama or…
