USC’s defense will face a stiff test against the LSU offense in Week 1 of the college football season on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas. The Trojans know that LSU is in many ways a mirror image of USC football. The Tigers, like the Trojans, had a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback on the field the past two seasons. The Tigers, like the Trojans, develop elite NFL receivers on a consistent basis. The Tigers, like the Trojans, have a new quarterback this season but feel that the skill-position pieces surrounding that quarterback will be more than good enough to deliver high-end results. USC fans might be worried about the defense against LSU and other opponents this season, but we have to remember that this is still a Lincoln Riley-coached team which can produce great offensive numbers.
At the 5:38 mark of our recent USC call-in show at The Voice of College Football, one USC football fan offered the reminder that if USC’s offense plays well, the margin for error on defense increases. Protecting the defense will be achieved by scoring in bunches and taking a multi-possession lead against LSU.
