C.J. Williams gets physical, Leon Lowery creates havoc during Wisconsin football’s 7th practice

PLATTTEVILLE – The conditions the Wisconsin football team practiced under Tuesday morning are a big reason why a handful of NFL teams once held their training camps here.

When the Badgers took the field at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on the campus of UW-Platteville the temperature was about 61 degrees. When they wrapped up their two-hour practice, it had yet to reach 70 degrees.

It was dramatic difference from the day before when the temperature was in the mid-80s when it was over.

Despite the conditions, the Badgers defense turned up the heat on the offense, using some different looks up front to pressure the quarterback while some of the team’s younger players made statements.

Here are some observations for the practice, UW’s seventh of fall camp.

Wisconsin wide receiver C.J. Williams playing with physical edge

Williams, a junior, has made a point of playing with more physicality this season. That approach has been exemplified by his blocking or how he attacks defenders after making a catch.

Tuesday he caught a pass near the sideline and rather than step out of bounds delivered a vicious stiff arm on Ricardo Hallman.

“I had a good spring ball and just being able to come out here and play more fluid and play more dominant,” Williams said last week. “I think that is the best word to us for me at the moment. It’s like hey, let me go out there and dominate these fools like I used to back in the day and remember who I am.”

Freshman Ernest Wilor’s versatility showing

Wilor arrived on campus as a defensive lineman. This week he has worked at outside linebacker. Tuesday we saw how the move could free up the 6-4, 267-pound native of Baltimore as he lined up on both sides of the defense as well as inside and rushed from a standing position or with his hand in the turf.
