Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh receives suspension, show-cause from NCAA: Social media reacts

On its way to its first national championship since 1997, the Michigan football program was a continuous subject of unsavory headlines during the 2023 season college football season.

Now, the repercussions of those assorted controversies are coming to life.

On Wednesday, the NCAA announced a four-year show cause and one-season suspension for former Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh as a result of an investigation into impermissible contact with recruits and players during a mandated dead period that was in effect during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ruling came after the NCAA determined that Harbaugh, who left his alma mater in January to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, “engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and violated head coach responsibility obligations.”

This case is separate from the ongoing probe into the sign-stealing scandal involving former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions. A draft Notice of Allegations from that investigation was obtained and leaked by ESPN on Sunday.

With training camps underway across the country and the start of the 2024 season only a few weeks away, the Harbaugh news caused a significant stir on social media, with media members, pundits and fans reacting to a story involving college football’s all-time winningest program and one of its most decorated coaches this century.
