Aug. 7—August is here, and that means high school football is right around the corner.
Teams are deep into fall camp, with the start of the 2024 season now just two weeks away.
A new season brings plenty of old and new players who will make headlines this fall. Here are nine to keep an eye on:

Gavin Fuqua, Austin running back
As Gavin Fuqua enters his senior season at Austin, he does so as one of the top running backs in north Alabama. As a junior, Fuqua rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and accounted for 21 touchdowns running, receiving and even throwing the football. The do-it-all player is another in a long line of great running backs at Austin under head coach Jeremy Perkins, and he will make the Austin offense go in 2024.

Porter Simmons, Hartselle defensive line
It’s rare to find a guy who brings in three years of playing experience before his senior year, but the Tigers have that in senior defensive lineman Porter Simmons. Simmons saw the field as a freshman and has been a key part of the Tigers’ defense ever since. Simmons has multiple Division I offers already and is set to be a crucial cog of new head coach Bert Newton’s first team this fall.

Trey Greenwell, Decatur defensive back
Trey Greenwell started every game for the Red Raiders last season at receiver. This year, though, the senior will make the move to safety. It’s usually a sign of high trust to ask a senior starter to move positions, and new head coach John Ritter is certainly looking for as much senior leadership as possible as he fields a team that has 70 freshmen and sophomores.

Ty Jones, West Morgan linebacker
