RB Montrell Johnson Jr. update and other takeaways from Florida football practice

Florida football held its sixth practice of fall camp on Tuesday night at the Sanders Practice Fields.

In all, the Florda Gators will host 17 practices leading up to their season opener on Aug. 31 against Miami. Florida is facing Miami for the first time since beating the Hurricanes 24-20 in Orlando to open the 2019 season.

Florida returns 14 starters on offense and defense from a team that went 5-7 last season under head coach Billy Napier. The Gators also made some significant additions in the transfer portal and added an incoming freshman class that includes five-star quarterback DJ Lagway and five-star edge rusher LJ McCray,

“Competition, roles on this team, has been intense for three days, and it will continue to be this way,” Napier said. “We’ve worked hard to build this roster, we have more competitive depth, and I think that’s proven to be true on offense, defense and special teams.”

Here are three takeaways from the open portion of practice:

Florida RB Montrell Johnson Jr. in black jersey, watching drills

Florida football running back Montrell Johnson Jr., who had his knee scoped over the weekend, was at practice in a black jersey watching running backs go through drills. Johnson didn’t have a brace on but wore a protective sleeve running down his right leg and walked around without a limp. He’s been termed as “week-to-week” in fall camp.

With Johnson out, sophomore running back Treyaun Webb, JUCO transfer running back Ja’Kobi Jackson and freshman running backs Jaden Baugh and KD Daniles received more reps.

Florida football secondary banged up

Several other Florida football players in the secondary were either limited or out in black jerseys, including safety Asa Turner, cornerback Ja’Keem Jackson, cornerback Devin Moore and cornerback Cormani McClain.
