2025 5-star WR Kaliq Lockett’s commitment to Texas sends a clear message to Texas A&M

.

Wednesday’s news that 2025 5-star wide receiver Kaliq Lockett committed to the Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M’s WR coach Holmon Wiggins, who left Alabama for the Aggies earlier this year, has yet to land his prized blue-chip receiver within head coach Mike Elko’s first recruiting class.

Blaming any coach for recruiting misses is always the easy way out for every fan base, but in the case of Lockett, this has been brewing for quite some time.

According to several recruiting analysts, Lockett’s relationship with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s success in developing the wide receiver position during his Alabama OC tenure included Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith.

Under former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher, current Philadelphia Eagles Ainias Smith was the only wide receiver drafted during his tenure.

So, what will ultimately change Texas A&M’s wide receiver recruiting trajectory? Better offensive production. Under new OC Collin Klein, the Aggies’ offense should vastly improve under his scheme, opening up holes in the passing game and finally allowing the program’s current and future receivers to produce at a consistent rate.

For Lockett, watching Texas’s offense move up and down the field last season likely played a huge part in his decision. For Mike Elko and his offensive staff, emulating this success will continue to garner more attention for elite receiver talent.
