Alabama football and coach Kalen DeBoer officially began their preparations for the 2024 season last week, beginning preseason camp leading up to Alabama’s season-opener on Aug. 31.
Ahead of the season, many questions remain about the Crimson Tide’s secondary, with it having to replace every starting defensive back from its 2023 roster aside from Malachi Moore. Alabama picked up transfer Domani Jackson, Keon Sabb and DaShawn Jones amongst others to fill necessary holes within its depth chart. Another thing the Tide has, too, is an arsenal of true freshmen — five to be exact — who are also looking to fill those holes within the secondary and have received much praise from coaches while doing so.
Here are five freshmen to watch for in 2024 along the Crimson Tide’s secondary.
Zabien Brown, cornerback
If A-Day didn’t make it clear, Brown is going to be a big force among the Crimson Tide’s defense. Brown hails from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, where he finished his senior season with 22 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one tackle for loss. Brown is listed as 6-foot, 196-pounds per the UA website and enrolled at Alabama in January, coming in as a five-star prospect.
Brown impressed coaches through spring ball and has continued to do so in the summer, with coaches and teammates alike saying “he doesn’t look like a freshman.”
“Zabien was so impressive to me coming right off the jump,” defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said to reporters this week. “To walk out of high school early as a mid-year enrollee then to be able to play the way he has been playing from the spring time … What I’ve been most impressed with him is when he makes a mistake.
