Florida’s senior running back named to Doak Walker Award Watch List

The Doak Walker Award Watch List was announced on Tuesday and included Florida football’s senior running back [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. among the 49 players named to this year’s preseason tally.

Johnson came to Gainesville along with head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] ahead of the 2022 campaign, following the Gators skipper from their previous gig with the Lousiana Ragin’ Cajuns. There, Johnson played all 14 games during his freshman year, leading his team in rushing touchdowns (12) while finishing second on the team in rushing yards (838) on 5.2 yards per carry.

With the Orange and Blue, the New Orleans native appeared in all 13 games during the 2022 season, starting nine games and wrapping things up with 155 rushes for 841 yards and 10 touchdowns that fall.

Johnson continued his consistency last season, when he played in all 12 games (starting 11) while leading the team in rushing yards (817) for the second straight season; he averaged 5.4 yards per carry and 68.0 yards per game along with six touchdowns (five rushing and one receiving).

About the Doak Walker Award

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award in November with a subsequent list of three finalists later that month.

The Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, which is made up of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-American running backs, media members and selected special representatives, will cast a second vote in December to determine the winner, which will be…
