SOUTH BEND — Freshman linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa hasn’t even played in his first college football game, yet he’s already blowing up plays at Notre Dame football practice.
At least that was the sense one gathered from the way associate head coach/running backs coach Deland McCullough described the newcomer’s prowess as a blitzer.
“Kyngstonn came up, we had two guys block him, and he spun out both of them, with the back being one of them,” McCullough said after Day 3 of fall camp. “I just watched the tape, and I said, ‘Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?!! … How’s that happen?”
The running back in Viliamu-Asa’s way on that play? Sophomore Jeremiyah Love, now up to a listed weight of 206 pounds and cat-quick himself.

A consensus four-star recruit from St. John Bosco High School in southern California, Viliamu-Asa already packs 240 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame. Yet he has more than just quick-twitch burst and physical force beyond his years.
“Kyngstonn, the guy is just crafty,” McCullough said, shaking his head. “It’s one thing to say, ‘Oh, guys are fast,’ but fast with no craft …”
Means little. That’s not the case with KVA.
He and sophomore Drayk Bowen, the 2022 IndyStar Mr. Football, are battling for the right to follow two-time captain JD Bertrand as the starting “Mike” linebacker.
