It was padded, live football for the first time in camp Wednesday.
The Colorado State football team used its first day in full pads as a scrimmage day at Canvas Stadium.
The season opener (Aug. 31 at No. 4 Texas) is fast approaching, but in camp terms its still early days. The depth chart is not set, a bunch of freshmen received their first real college football hits and there’s plenty of work to do.
A first scrimmage won’t provide all the answers, but there were some interesting takeaways of what’s coming this season.
Tight end battle in spotlight
Dallin Holker’s departure to the NFL left a big void in the offense. He was one of the top tight ends in college football and not easily replaceable.
Arguably the play of the day Wednesday came from one of the players trying to step into his spot. Senior Vince Brown II took a short pass on a naked bootleg play, turned up field, juked one defender and then trucked right through defensive back Elias Larry on the way to a roughly 30-yard touchdown.
Brown, who’s fiancée is due with their child in September, says Holker’s departure and the upcoming birth of their baby helped sharpen an extreme focus in preparation for the season.
“I have a different chip on my shoulder I’ve never felt ever in my life as a football player. From spring ball to now, I have so much confidence of what to do in this offense, how to be productive and feel if the coaches give me the chance, I’ll be productive,” Brown said.

Jaxxon Warren, the 6-foot-8 former quarterback who transferred in from Navarro Junior College, also had an impressive leaping reception.
Those two players seem to be the front-runners to take Holker’s spot.
