ANN ARBOR, Mich. — This may be a new-look Michigan football team entering 2024 but a lot will be the same as it was last year.
One place where there’s an opportunity for both annual consistency as well as shaking some things up comes in special teams, where the Wolverines do have some incumbent kick and punt returners but are always looking at players who could take on the role.
On Thursday, new special teams coordinator JB Brown, who vowed things won’t look too different for the maize and blue in his unit, shared that Tyler Morris and Semaj Morgan are both still working as return men — adding that star cornerback Will Johnson also has had some time on task — but the unit is still far away from deciding who will be the go-to guys come game day.
“100%. Yeah, Semaj is back there. Tyler’s back there. They both have been doing a great job,” Brown said. “Will’s been back there. A lot of people have been back there. We’re trying to gain depth in that role. You’re gonna use a lot of guys throughout the season. There’s gonna be injuries at some point during the season. So you’re gonna have to have a stable of returners back there. So we got a lot of people working. They’ve all gotten the ball really well. They’ve all put a lot of work in the summer ball, put a lot of work in this fall camp.”
Of course, when fans hear names like two of your starting wide receivers or one of the biggest stars in college football in Will Johnson playing on special teams, a little fear courses through their veins. That’s largely because in 2021, wide receiver Ronnie Bell was lost for the season in Week 1 after tearing his ACL on a punt return.
Regardless, that’s not the type of thing Brown likes to think about when it comes to finding the best returners. Ultimately, it’s not about potential injuries as much as it’s about…
