The Jets welcomed the Washington Commanders to town for a joint practice on Thursday, but some uninvited soggy weather forced quarterback Aaron Rodgers out of the action.
Head coach Robert Saleh decided to sit Rodgers out of Thursday’s practice due to the rainy conditions around Florham Park, taking the cautious route with the veteran quarterback.
It’s certainly easy to understand Saleh’s thinking: why risk having your 40-year-old quarterback who is coming off a torn Achilles practice on a wet field? On the other hand, though, it would have been of interest to watch Rodgers practice against another NFL team, especially given that the four-time MVP isn’t likely going to play in any of the Jets’ three preseason games before the regular season opens on September 9.
Coming into training camp, Rodgers said he feels “great” physically, but he knows the importance of this training camp as he looks to get back to full speed in what hopefully will be his first full season in New York.
“I think it’s gonna take a little time,” Rodgers said at the beginning of camp. “I feel great. We track all the numbers where I work out out west and have for a decade, and my movement stuff is tracking the exact same as last year. Actually, a little bit stronger with some of the squatting stuff that we did. I just need the reps. The last five percent of being 100 percent is just the mental part.
“Not having played for an entire season really, it’s going to take a nice training camp to feel like myself.”
