Former Albertville football coach Chip English is now the lead man at Hoover High School.
English’s move to the top spot comes following the resignation of Drew Gilmer after he was put on administrative leave earlier this week. It came after an incident occurred at practice sometime during fall camp. On Tuesday, videos of an incident at a Hoover practice circulated on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter. Defensive coordinator Adam Helms was also placed on leave before resigning on Thursday.
“We appreciate his willingness to serve in this capacity and support our players and coaching staff during this transition,” the school said in a a statement about English’s promotion.

English was named interim coach when Gilmer and Helms were placed on leave. He was the quarterbacks coach in 2022 but was named the offensive coordinator when Gilmer took over in January. He previously was head coach at Class 7A Albertville in northeast Alabama. He was there for two years, going 2-18 with back-to-back 1-9 seasons.
Gilmer’s move to Hoover was one of the biggest moves of the high school football offseason in January coming off the 2023 state title he won with Clay-Chalkville. Gilmer spent seven years leading the Cougars, going 81-12 and winning the 2021 and 2023 Class 6A state titles.
Hoover starts the season on Saturday, Aug. 24, in Miami against Western (Florida).
