Giants quarterback Drew Lock is expected to miss some time due to a “bad” bone contusion and a strained oblique, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
Lock exited Thursday’s preseason win over the Detroit Lions with 2:03 to play in the first quarter and was later ruled questionable to return with a hip injury.
Rapoport reported Lock is expected to miss some time, but no surgery is required.
Head coach Brian Daboll, speaking to the media before he had met with the team’s medical staff earlier on Friday, provided no concrete update on Lock’s status, adding, “I know he was sore last night.”
“It could be longer than a couple days, but I don’t want to give you one answer and then it’s not,” the head coach said as far as why he didn’t have more details on the injury.
Daboll did say that there is the “potential” for the Giants to bring in another quarterback for Saturday’s game at the Houston Texans “if he can’t go.”
Lock, who completed 4 of 10 pass attempts for 17 yards and an interception, had been hit several times and sacked once during his four drives under center. He also ran the ball twice for 12 yards.
Big Blue’s offense had two three-and-outs and two first downs over his four possessions before Tommy DeVito entered and, behind a strong running game with Eric Gray scoring a pair of touchdowns, led New York to a 14-3 win.
In relief, DeVito completed eight of 15 attempts for 92 yards and was sacked once.
General manager Joe Schoen had said via the game broadcast that Lock was fine and could have returned to the game if needed.
Daniel Jones, along with several other of the Giants starters, did not play in the game. Jones’ availability for New York’s next preseason game is unclear as he continues to recover from ACL surgery last November.
Lock signed a one-year deal as a free agent this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He carries a $5 million cap hit for the 2024 season.
