A few of Kentucky’s best teams in Class 2A, 3A and 4A are from the Greater Cincinnati area. Beechwood has won two of the last three state championships in Class 2A. Covington Catholic lost one game in 2023, the 4A state championship.
Not all of the teams in the area from these three classes had great seasons last year, but the great thing about high school football is the turnover: all it takes to go from bad to good is one great class of players.
Below, with each team listed alphabetically, is a preview of each of the Greater Cincinnati schools in Kentucky’s Class 2A, 3A and 4A. High school football in Kentucky kicks off on Friday, Aug. 23.
Class 2A
Beechwood Tigers
2023: 12-2, made class 2A state semi-final
Head Coach: Jay Volker
Returning players: QB Clay Hayden, RB/LB Chase Flaherty, RB/DB Brody Aylor, WR/DB Luke Erdman, WR/DB Tyler Fryman, WR/S James Cusick, OL/DL Jack Meier, OL/DE Mattox Kelly, OL/LB Brody Waddel, DE/WR Chase McDaniel, LB/RB Nathan Parton, DB/WR Caleb Arrasmith
Beechwood quarterback Clay Hayden (12) threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 48 touchdowns in 2023. He and nearly all of his top weapons return to the Tigers for this season.
Outlook: In 2023, for the first time since 2020, the Beechwood Tigers were not state champions. They were good enough to do it, they finished third in Kentucky’s Class 2A for points per game (47.6) and first in points allowed per game (14.6), but lost to the eventual champion Mayfield by a field goal in the state semifinals.
The offense is led by two-time state champion quarterback Clay Hayden, who will be a senior in 2024 after throwing for 3,910 yards and 48 touchdowns with a 73% completion percentage last season. With Hayden, the Beechwood offense will be a force.
The Tigers return all four players who rushed for over 100 yards in 2023 and four of their top five receivers….
