Ranking SEC coaches riles up my readers. If you believe I under-ranked your coach, that’s a good sign. It means you’re happy with the program’s direction.
Unsurprisingly, no Arkansas and Florida fans weighed in to say I undervalued their coach. I did hear from Alabama and Auburn fans, though, who thought Kalen DeBoer and Hugh Freeze should be higher on my list.
Let’s answer some mail.
Paul writes (in response to me ranking DeBoer No. 4 among SEC coaches): I guess Coach DeBoer doesn’t get much credit for what he did at Washington with less talent. I wonder if Kirby Smart’s success might be that Georgia finally got a coach that took advantage of being the only game in town in a high population state adjacent to Florida rather than being a coaching genius.
My response: I ranked DeBoer behind only Smart, Brian Kelly and Steve Sarkisian. I consider that ample credit. DeBoer had a great two-year run at Washington. He’s never coached in the SEC, and he’s been a Power Four coach for just two seasons. That doesn’t concern me much. I think Alabama nailed this hire, and DeBoer will thrive in Tuscaloosa. When he does, he’ll have an opportunity to climb my list.
As for Smart, he’s the SEC’s only active coach with a national championship. And he’s got two. Of course he’s No. 1.

“Sports Writers” is another term for Jock Sniffers who could not do anything but talk about people that do.
