CLEMSON — Clemson football cornerback Shelton Lewis was injured during the Tigers’ first scrimmage at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, according to multiple reports.
According to reports, Lewis suffered a lower-leg injury and is on crutches. The Greenville News reached out to a team spokesperson who deferred comment to coach Dabo Swinney. Swinney will be available following Clemson’s scrimmage at Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
Swinney said this past Saturday that the team had a couple players “banged up” after the scrimmage and was awaiting evaluations from the training staff to see the extent of each.
Lewis, a sophomore, is battling for one of two starting cornerback positions this season with Avieon Terrell and Jeadyn Lukus. Lewis became a late-season starter last year, recording 10 tackles, nine pass deflections and two interceptions, including a pick six, through 13 games (two starts).
Lewis’ injury comes less than three weeks before Clemson faces Georgia on Aug. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP poll and US LBM coaches poll, while the Tigers sit at No. 14.
