Giants Notes: Malik Nabers ‘day-to-day,’ plan to play Daniel Jones at Houston

Malik Nabers appears to have avoided a serious issue after the Giants rookie wide receiver sustained an ankle injury over the weekend.

“Sore today, we’ll back off him take it day-to-day, that’s where we’re at with him,” head coach Brian Daboll said ahead of Monday’s practice.

Nabers left the field during the final team period of Sunday’s practice and was later seen taking off his left cleat and having his foot checked out by the training staff. He observed the remainder of practice from the sidelines. The injury was reported as a “minor ankle sprain.”

When asked if the Giants had done an MRI or X-rays on the wide receiver, Daboll said the Giants’ medical staff was “still doing evaluation on him,” before adding he wouldn’t “get into too much of the details.”

“I think he’s ok, he’s just a little sore today,” he said, adding, “I don’t think it’s fractured.”

The head coach said the injury occurred when the rookie “just twisted up on it, it wasn’t on contact or anything like that.”

“It was just an on-air little route, he just buckled a little bit, I’m hopeful that he’s ok,” Daboll said.

Nabers, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been proving his worth during his first training camp, as the LSU product has already created a highlight reel of spectacular catches. But that production won’t necessarily mean he will be a healthy scratch this preseason or held out of practices.

“If they deem him ready to go and he feels good, we’ll continue to work him and get work,” Daboll said. “Again, he’s a rookie so, if they say give him a few days. But whenever he’s ready, then we’ll just go and practice.”

He added: “If he’s ready to play, he’ll play but if they say we need to back off, then we need to back off. You’d like to see everybody be able to be out there and play, but you understand this is a contact sport.
