It’s a void in the Shore Conference football coaching universe the likes of which have never been seen before, with Middletown South’s Steve Antonucci and Shore Regional’s Mark Costantino stepping away from the sideline this season, taking 430 career wins and 10 sectional titles with them.
So while the league resettles with 10 programs featuring new coaches as summer camps ramp up throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties, the two legends, neither of whom has ruled out a return at some later date, have each settled into the first summer without football in more than three decades.
“It’s been very relaxing, honestly,” Antonucci said. “I’ve done a lot of traveling with my son (Matt), my youngest son is going to be a junior at Manasquan, he’s a travel baseball player so we’ve been out almost every weekend. I’ve been to the beach a little more, spent some time with the family that I haven’t been able to do, so it’s been good.”
Antonucci’s former defensive coordinator Marc Tomo takes over at Middletown South, while Don Klein, who played for Costantino and spent 17 seasons as Ocean Township’s head coach, is Shore’s new boss.
