Class 5A football: O’Hara, Alexander return to lead Cooper, Highlands features rising star

In 2023, some of Greater Cincinnati’s biggest high school football stars played in Northern Kentucky’s Class 5A.

Highlands 2024 graduate Brody Benke, who scored over 50 touchdowns and now plays at Middle Tennessee, was among last year’s brightest, as well as Brach Rice from Dixie Heights, who totaled nearly 200 tackles on his way to being a 2023-2024 Cincinnati Enquirer co-defensive player of the year.

Still, Kentucky’s Class 5A has no shortage of returning star power, high-octane offense or state-championship contenders. For instance, Cam O’Hara from Cooper threw for nearly 50 touchdowns in his sophomore season on the way to an appearance in the state final.

Here, listed alphabetically, is a preview of each Cincinnati-area football team in Kentucky’s Class 5A.

Boone County Rebels

2023: 2-8

Head coach: Dan Court

Returning players: RB/LB Braxton Graves, WR/DB Isaiah Jones, LB Jacob Jonathan

Outlook: Boone County has a new head football coach in 2024: Dan Court. Court inherits an offense without much experience, as the Rebels’ 2023 starting quarterback Jamarion Hocker and top receiver Mason Hall won’t be back this season. Braxton Graves, who rushed for 8.1 yards per carry and seven touchdowns in 2023, will return, and he figures to get more carries than the 53 he took last season. The Boone County offense will be inexperienced in 2024, but having Graves is a great place to start.

The defense is in a similar spot for Boone County, as only two of the team’s top eight tacklers from 2023 will return. Linebacker Jacob Johnathan, who led the team in tackles last season, is back, which should give a young unit a strong leader in the middle. Overall, Court takes over what will be a very young 2024 Boone County team.
